Matt Butterfield's first encounter with photography was as a young child, when he was given a disposable camera and discovered the magic of looking through a viewfinder and capturing the world (or a bunch of rocks in his backyard) as he saw it. Years later, frustrated after nearly failing a black and white film class his sophomore year in high school, he was given a two megapixel point and shoot digital camera. He found that the rapidly emerging world of digital photography, combined with the internet, gave him the freedom and instant gratification he needed to capture and share his view of the world with others. In 2004, when it came time for college, he headed across the state from his hometown of Dearborn, to Grand Rapids, Michigan to study engineering at Grand Valley State University. After one semester of engineering, he knew something was wrong. He was spending much more time photographing and posting pictures on his website than he was studying. So the next semester he changed his major to photography and hasn't looked back. He quickly landed a job at the school newspaper as a staff photographer, where he fell in love with shooting a wide range of assignments such as sports and music events. Currently, he is living in Boston and is a photography co-op at The Boston Globe. |
